As a filmmaker, I don’t always like to get political, but when I do, I partner with Guerrilla Politic, a local marketing firm based in Detroit, Michigan. Their mission resonates with me: to design a better democracy by helping to put together campaigns for local candidates—ordinary people who want to get involved in their community. In order to get the change you want, you have to be that change. & Not everybody is cut out for the challenge of local office!
Recently, I had the honor of working on a video project about Guerrilla Politic itself. It was an exciting opportunity to showcase an organization that I believe is making a significant impact. The project, titled “The Arena,” encapsulates the essence of what Guerrilla Politic stands for: starting local to change the world.
The core message of the video is clear: to make a difference, you need to win hearts and minds right in your own backyard. Guerrilla Politic is dedicated to helping individuals do just that, one seat, one dollar, one movement at a time. They’re building a democratic bench of people who share values like integrity, transparency, grit, and determination. They believe that people matter, the planet matters, and our kids matter.
I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Adrian, the head of Guerrilla Politic, on a few shoots over the years. Her background in advertising and her understanding of the production process made the project seamless. I provided a shot list and mostly acted as a camera operator on this one, and she gave some general direction by setting up the scenarios she wanted to capture. The Guerilla Politic team wrote the script. She also efficiently arranged the production schedule for the day. Her expertise ensured that we could capture the essence of Guerrilla Politic’s mission and values.
Whether you’re running for office for the first time or the fifth, growing your nonprofit, or raising funds for a cause you believe in, Guerrilla Politic is there to support you. They offer unwavering support, no matter the size of your community, because they know that when you win, everyone wins.
Working on this video was a huge for growth and a large mile marker in may career as a videographer and director. It was a privilege to be chosen to share a little about Guerrilla Politic and the incredible work they do. The spirit of “The Arena” is about stepping up and making a difference, and Guerrilla Politic is there to have your back every step of the way.
