I’m excited to announce I’m finally an FAA Certified Drone Plot! I’ve been flying as a hobbyist for about a year now, and I finally took the test. When I started researching the Part 107 test and what to study, I wasn’t sure what route to take.
I really wanted to get legal because of the recent changes to the drone flying rules by the FAA; as they’re tightening up. Should I take a class first? is there an online study guide anywhere? Once I found the over 100 page document provided by the FAA as a study guide, things were looking complicated. Weather patters?! This stuff is in a different language. A Pilots language! So I tracked down a study class to attend locally. I took some real searching.
I found a company called Skydata 360 on facebook, which at first glance at their socials; doesn’t look very active. I made a reservation online with some kind of app assistance which turned out to not get back to the company owner as the booking account wasn’t active. The day of the class I showed up at Howell Airport and nobody was there! But crazy thing, I was able to call the owner of Skydata 360, I got him on the phone and he invited me to his house to show me what to study and provide some guides. We talked for a couple hours that afternoon and he also linked me to a practice test from Sporty’s Pilot Shop. I studied for two nights, and went into the Ann Arbor Airport at 9:00am to take the test and passed first try. The class was insurance to I wouldn’t waste my first attempt on the Part 107 test. Once I studied and got familiar with the material, I realized flying legally actually opens up more airspace to drone pilots. Now I’ll have to take this test every two years to maintain this status, and up to date on the latest rules and regulations. Thanks for flying the friendly skies with me!
