Pura Vida Adventures: Exploring Playa Grande & Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Costa Rica has been on my list for a while, and this trip to Playa Grande and Tamarindo did not disappoint. As a filmmaker and traveler, I always look for the perfect blend of adventure, culture, and those cinematic moments that make a trip unforgettable. This one had it all—stunning beaches, hidden waterfalls, incredible food, and even a few unexpected surprises (some more shocking than others).

Why Playa Grande Over Tamarindo?

Most people head straight to Tamarindo, the bustling surf town known for its nightlife and energy. We planned to do the same but ended up staying in Playa Grande—a quieter, more laid-back paradise just across the estuary. It turned out to be the perfect choice. The beach was less crowded, the sunsets were unreal, and it still had easy access to Tamarindo via a quick water taxi. There was enough food and relaxation to be had on the Playa Grande side.

We stayed in an Airbnb just minutes from the beach, where we could swim in the pool, watch monkeys in the trees, and kick back with a private chef cooking up fresh Costa Rican meals (one night 😉 ). It was the ideal setup for both relaxation and capturing some epic footage.

Adventures & Unexpected Moments

This trip wasn’t just about soaking up the sun—though we definitely did plenty of that. Here are some of the biggest highlights:

🏝️ Tamarindo & Beach Life

  • Took the water taxi across the estuary to explore Tamarindo’s markets, bars, and surf spots.
  • Grabbed fresh acai bowls and checked out local artisan vendors.
  • Caught golden hour shots of surfers riding waves as the sun dipped below the horizon.

💦 La Leona Waterfall: A Hidden Gem

  • This hike was a game-changer. It was an intense trek through rivers, caves, and narrow rock passages. The reward? A waterfall hidden inside a canyon that looked straight out of a movie. I brought my camera, but honestly, nothing could do it justice. If you ever get the chance—go!

🎉 A Wild Security Guard Situation

  • One evening, we were hanging out around the pool when we heard two loud BANGS. Turns out, the security guard at our Airbnb accidentally fired his gun while starting his shift. Luckily, no one was hurt. It would of bummed me out having to take Julio to the hospital.

Final Thoughts: Costa Rica is Magic

Between the laid-back vibes of Playa Grande, the adventures in Tamarindo, and the unforgettable journey to La Leona Waterfall, this trip was exactly what I needed. The mix of nature, culture, and surprises (good and bad) made it one for the books.

If you’re planning a Costa Rica trip and debating between Tamarindo and Playa Grande, I’d say stay in Playa Grande for the peace, but hop over to Tamarindo for the action. And no matter what, don’t skip out on the waterfalls!
